Tambourines and Elephants is a surrealist take on America through the lens of three children from a tiny Ohio town. It includes a tornado-chasing Second-Coming cult, conspiracies real and imagined, a Department of Defense-sponsored reality TV show, an obsession with Mark Rothko, and a whole lot of subsidized corn.
Topaz is the story of a small agrarian town, the Valley, and its growing pains as it comes up against its resource limits in a parched Southern California landscape. The account of what happens when the Valley's only spring runs dry is told largely through the lens of Topaz, the only son of the Tercero family, who have trained for centuries as long-distance runners--message carriers. The story explores the strength of social contracts, connection with landscape, and the limits of the human body.
